Discover India - F.A.Qs

The first event of 2015 is upon us. Discover India promises to be a fun trip that will remind you everything you know about your country and tell you much more that you didn't know. We come from a fascinating country that is so diverse and complex that we can dedicate an entire trivia event with over 400 questions just on India. There have been a lot of questions on how difficult the event will be and what to expect. This post will attempt to dispel all your doubts.

Or you can skip the FAQ and sign up here

1. What do you mean by trivia?

A. This is an easy one. Calling this event a quiz is a misnomer. We are not doing a traditional question-answer session. Questions are structured more to gently nudge you to what you already know. Trivia is not a question like "Who is the President of India?" Instead, it will look something like "Which President of India started his career as an aerospace engineer and made his name with India's missile programs?". Every question will have a lot of clues to gently guide you to the answer.

2. Is it only trivia questions?

Nope. There are actually only a few direct trivia rounds. We have a round of Dumb Charades, a round of 20 questions, a round of pictionary, couple of audio rounds, couple of video rounds and much more. It is designed to be something that engages the entire team and also the audience.

3. Are there prizes?

Yep. There are cash prizes in the form of gift cards to be won by the first, second and third placed teams.

4. Is it going to be difficult?

Nope. Questions are designed to be answered. Not to showcase the quiz master's knowledge. The goal it to have over 90% of the questions answered by one team or the other. If you had the habit of reading the newspaper and keeping in touch with what happened in India during your time growing up, chances are, you will know most of what is asked. If you happen to keep in touch with your country through the Internet, friends and family, you will most certainly do very well. Most answers will be on the tip of your tongue and someone in your team will remember it.

5. Do I need to prepare for it?

Heck no. Come and have fun.

6. Can I bring kids?

I strongly encourage families to have their  kids in their teams. The recommended age is 10 but if you have ones younger that are interested in participating, they are welcome to. There is no hard and fast rule. It will be a fun effort that is sure to bring the family together in an entirely new and enjoyable way. Older kids will also learn a ton of stuff about India they never read in a book or watched on Youtube.

For folks with younger kids, feel free to bring them. They will get a thrill out of hanging out with parents as everyone is trying to answer questions and such.

7. I want to participate but don't have a team.

You are never alone. We will pair you up with someone else at the venue. No worries. Very few works will come in as teams.

8. Is there a team size?

Many of the rounds are group efforts. So we recommend teams of 3 or more. Also, teams larger than 5 will have too much confusion. Teams with 3-5 members will do best.

9. I am still undecided. How long do I have?

Unfortunately, there is a lot of preparation that goes into an event like this. We have sponsorship commitments based on participation. If we don't meet our minimum bar of 40 participants by Feb 25th, we will not be able to hold the event. Simple as that. All it takes is to put your name in the participant list. Teams and logistics can be figured out later. Larger the group, the merrier. This is one time where postponing singing up could result in the event not happening.

10. Does the event need volunteers?

Nope. It is a two person show. One to ask questions and another to keep score and time. Everyone else, including CIC Board gets to participate in this event.

11. Can I just come to watch?

Sure but participating is all the fun. I also encourage folks with family visiting from India to get them to participate. They may be the edge that pips the event in your favor.

12. What do I need to do?

Just sign up. Now!
